The book ‘The
disease and the cure’ by Ibn Qayyim was written as a response to a question.
The book addresses
important issues.
The question
was about the disease of the heart and the cure – spiritual disease.
The heart
becomes physically ill and the cure is with the doctor - it can pose a risk to life – requires medicine
However the
threat in the book talks about the spiritual disease – it afflicts the heart
and is the most dangerous disease – it occurs due to sin and disobedience. It
causes the heart to be sick.
In the Quran
it says
‘In the
heart is a disease and he increases it’ (Surah Ahzab: 32)
The disease
of the heart has 2 categories:
1.
The
disease of lust (arises from sin and disobedience)
2.
The
disease of doubt (Doubt of religion – affects aqeedah)
A person can
be afflicted by these diseases even in their own home due to smart phones/
internet.
May Allah protect
is and our families.
The disease
of doubt is the most dangerous as it can lead to leaving Islam.
How do we
treat the disease of doubt and desires?
The cure is not
through medicine and procedures – the cure is through repentance to Allah and righteous
deeds. TURN TO ALLAH
If the heart
is sick – repent to Allah and perform righteous deed – for this heals the heart.
Do this
through seeking beneficial knowledge – from the book of Allah and the sunnah.
Benefit from
sitting in the circles of knowledge - there is light.
In several
verses in the Quran it states that it can bring people from darkness to light.
Surah Ibrahim:
1
Alif-Lãm-Ra.
˹This is˺ a Book which We have revealed to you
˹O Prophet˺ so that you may lead people out of
darkness and into light, by the Will of their Lord, to the Path of the
Almighty, the Praiseworthy—
The Quran
was sent to the people as a cure for body and heart – physical and spiritual.
The Quran is
Shifa – a guide and healing.
The disease
of the heart is more dangerous than the disease of the body.
The disease
of the body can lead to pain and death
The disease
of the heart can had to the hellfire as doubts can lead to kufr.
The more
sins a person commits, the sicker his heart will become.
More doubts
a person has, heart will be sick eventually the heart will die.
Shaykh
Fawzan said:
Take time to
read the Quran and study the sunnah and to seek forgiveness.
If the
spiritual disease is not treated the heart will become sicker until it dies –
the will have no feeling, no awareness, no jealousy and no love for good.
