The
disease and the Cure الداء و الدواء

Ibn Qayyim said:
Bismilllah ar Rahman ar Rahim, La hawla wa la quwita ila
billah.
The question that was posed to Ibn Qayyim:
‘What do the distinguished scholars say to a man that has
been trialled with a calamity (disobedience and sins)?
The man knows that if he continues it will ruin his worldly
affairs and the hereafter. He has tried to repel disobedience, but it keeps
getting stronger.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and
blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever relieves the hardship of a believer in
this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever
helps ease one in difficulty, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and
the Hereafter. Whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his
faults in this world and the Hereafter. Allah helps the servant as long as he
helps his brother.

Ibn Qayyim answered the question as a whole book.
The man was trialled and tested in disobedience and wants
remedy to fear Allah.
Ibn Qayyim started:
All praise is for Allah and quoted the following hadith:
It was narrated that Usamah bin Sharik said:
“I saw the Bedouins asking the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘Is there any harm in such
and such, is there any harm in such and such?’ He said to them: ‘O slaves of
Allah! Allah has only made harm in that which transgresses the honor of one’s
brother. That is what is sinful.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Is there
any sin if we do not seek treatment?’ He said: ‘Seek treatment, O slaves of
Allah! For Allah does not create any disease but He also creates with it the
cure, except for old age.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the
best thing that a person may be given?’ He said: ‘Good manners.’”
Sunan Ibn Majah 3436
This show the wisdom of the people of knowledge, - this
hadith opens up the door for hope if you repent and to repel despair.
There is a way out.
Shaykh Fawzan said:
Every disease is created by Allah and brought into existence
as a trial and a test. He created these diseases and sickness for a wisdom –
Allah sent down the cure that is to be used to treat disease and sickness. Cure
and remedy are from the beneficial means. A person should not leave remedy and
medicine.
People should not give up and just say it is Qadr.
Treat with the medicine – search for the remedy. It exists –
it is out there!
Shaykh Fawzan emphasizes the wisdom of Ibn Qayyim started
with this hadith. A person should not just surrender to sins and disobedience.
There is repentance and remedy.
Take the Qadr and take necessary means.
Tie your camels and trust Allah – take the legislated
means.
Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
Allah did not send
the disease without the cure.
However, the existence of cure is not sufficient – person MUST
USE the remedy and implement it.
Shaykh Fawzan said:
If you fill a house with medicine but don’t use it – it won’t
help you.
You have to implement and use the cure.
It is a must to search for and apply the medicine.
If you use the wrong medicine, it will not benefit.
This requires people of knowledge and those with experience to
help with the medicine and cure – they can help provide a remedy for your sin.
Ask the right people – If you broke your leg, you don’t go
to the dentist!!!
One disease for which there is no cure is old age.
If you are getting old – seek forgiveness and seek a good
ending – die upon Tawheed and obedience. There is no eternity in this dunya.
Some people have been given wisdom, We have to return to the
scholars of Islam for the cure.
Allah and the prophet said: IF you follow this – then there is
Khayr.
