Lesson 7 – My notes
The disease and the Cure الداء و الدواء
By Ibn Qayyim
Read by Hassan Somali
If along with the supplication, the heart is present - focused on the objective - this dua is rarely rejected.
Ibn Qayyim said -
There is 6 times – if the dua is made, it is rarely rejected.
1. The last third of the night
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
(p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night
down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains,
saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to
invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is
there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"
Sahih al-Bukhari 1145
2. End of Athan
A man said: "Oh Messenger of Allah, the
mu'adhdhins excel us". The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «Say (the same words) as they say, and when
you come to the end, make a petition and that will be granted to you» (Abu
Daoud)
3. Between the athan and iqama
Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The supplication made between the
adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.
Sunan Abi Dawud 521 (Book 2, Hadith 131)
4. End of obligatory prayer
At the end of the prayer – after the tashahud and dua asking
for protection from the hellfire, the
grave, fitnah of the life, and the dajjaj, then supplilcate.
Ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace,
taught him the tashahud and then said, "Then choose whatever you wish to
ask (of Allah)." (Related by Muslim.)
5. When the imam ascends the mimbar until the end
of the prayer on Jummah.
6. The last hour of asr on a Friday
Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah reported: The
Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The
day of Friday is made of twelve hours. No Muslim finds himself supplicating to
Allah Almighty during one of them but that Allah will give it to him. Thus,
seek it out in the last hour after the afternoon prayer.”

Ibn Qayyim went on to talk about
the etiquettes of dua:
1. The dua
should be performed with humility of the heart and not headless
2. The servant
recognises their dire need of Allah. They recognise they are indeed weak and in
need.
O mankind! it is you who stand in
need of Allah, but Allah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all
praise. (35:15)
3. Servant
calls upon Allah, beseeching him –
‘call upon your lord with humility
and in secret (7:55)
4. Supplicate
facing the Qiblah
5. Supplicate in
state of purity – It is recommended that you are in a state of purity when
making dua as it is an act of worship.
6. Raise your
hands – put your hands in front of yourself together – this shows your weakness
to Allah
7. Start your
dua by praising and glorifying Allah and then send salutations on the prophet
and then ask dua.
Amr bin Malik Al-Janbi narrated
that he heard Fadalah bin `Ubaid saying:
The Prophet (ﷺ) heard a man
supplicating in his Salat but he did not send Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ), so
the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘This one has rushed.’ Then he called him and said to
him, or to someone other than him: ‘When one of you performs Salat, then let
him begin by expressing gratitude to Allah and praising Him. Then, let him send
Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ), then let him supplicate after that, whatever he
wishes.’”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3477
8. Repent and
seek Allah’s forgiveness and then request what you need and be persistent in your
request with hope and fear.
