Some of the reasons for the delay or absence in the effect
of a supplication, a dua.
Ibn Qayyim said
That Abdullah, son of Imam Ahmad mentioned that his father
mentioned in his book Az-Zuhd:
The children of Israel were afflicted with a calamity. They
all went outside to gather in one place and make dua and Allah revealed to
their Prophet to inform: them that they
go out to gather in a place, and their bodies are impure. They raise their palms, their hands and you
used them to spill blood. And you have used them to fill your homes with that
which is unlawful. And now that my anger has intensified, are you supplicating
to me? And you have only increased in remoteness from me, You have only increased
in distance from me.
Shaykh Fawzan explains this that hadith saying Allah
rejected their supplications because they used to eat what was unlawful, shed
the blood of people and take people’s lives without any right. This we find
agrees what is in the Quran and sunnah – in the hadith of prophet when it says:
Allah is good and pure and He only accepts that which is good and pure.
Abu Dharr -
The amount of righteousness that suffices a supplication is
the amount of salt that is required and suffices the food.
This hadith Shaykh Fawzan explained you should not make dua
without contemplation and without reflection. Rather, the dua should be sincere
and for Allah alone. The reference to the salt meaning – even a small amount is
enough and suffices the food.
Shaykh Fawzan said the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said as
hadith in Bukhari, Hadith of bani Israel, Narrate from the children of Israel
and there is nothing wrong with that.
Prophet said – if the people of the book narrate to you,
then do not affirm what they say and do not reject what they say and say – I
believe in Allah and his books and his messengers. Because if it was the truth,
they informed you of, you did not reject it. If it was falsehood, then you do
not affirm it for them.
Shaykh Fawzan said. The narrations of the children of Israel
are of 3 types (As mentioned by Ibn Kathir in the beginning of this tafsir.
1.
It agrees with our legislation – take it
2.
It opposes our legislation – leave it
3.
That which we do not affirm or do not reject. –
because we do not know if it is the truth or not.
Ibn Qayyim says – supplication is one of the most beneficial
cures whether someone has a disease, experiencing some difficulty or experiencing hard times.
Supplication is the enemy of calamity – it can repel it, it
can treat it and prevent it befalling and afflicting the servant,
Ibn Qayyim said – The dua is like the weapon of the
believer.
Example – a person on the battlefield. He fights with his
sword against his enemy. Likewise, the believer fights calamities with a
dua. That is the sword
Ali ibn Abi Talib narrates that the prophet said –
supplication is the weapon of the believer – it is the pillar of religion, And
it is the light of the heavens and the earth.
(This hadith is weak however the meaning is correct)
The effect of a dua on a calamity is of 3 levels:
1.
The supplication is stronger than the calamity
and it repels it
2.
The second the supplication is weaker because of
the deficiency of the one who is performing the dua. This dua can lighten the
calamity but the calamity is stronger.
3.
The dua is equal to the calamity and they cancel
each other out.
Everything that happens, it happens with the decree of
Allah. But this does not mean that we should not implement the necessary measures
and steps in order to remove ourselves from difficulty.
Rather it is legislated for us to supplicate to Allah and to
carry out the legislated means to remove from ourselves ant difficulty.
Prophet said
Supplication benefits that which has descended meaning
afflicted the servant and that which has not descended so its upon you servants
of Allah to supplicate, it is upon you to make dua.
Ibn Qayyim said – dua is one of the most beneficial cures,
Nothing repels the divine decree except supplication, and
nothing increases a person’s lifespan except righteousness.
A person is denied sustenance, provision due to a sin that
they commit.
Supplication is a mighty and magnificent station, and for
this reason, Allah commanded with supplication in many verses. And Allah
promised he will answer the dua.
Even the disbelievers when they are in a difficult situation
and they turn to Allah sincerely and they supplicate to him alone; Allah
answers their supplication. SO, what
about the believers.
If they happen to be aboard a ship ˹caught in a storm˺,
they cry out to Allah ˹alone˺ in sincere devotion. But as
soon as He delivers them ˹safely˺ to shore, they associate ˹others with Him once again˺. 29:65
Ruling of dua
Allah said; If my servant asks about me, say I am near
There is condition that need to be met for a dua to be
answered:
1.
Dua has to be legislated – you can’t ask for
haram
2.
Must be done sincerely for Allah
3.
When they make dua, they must be certain that
Allah will answer you
4.
Person must try their upmost to stay away from
unlawful things.
Nothing repels the divine decree like dua
Dua is from the divine decree.
If Allah decrees it, and servant will supplicate.
