Lesson 3 – My notes
The
disease and the Cure الداء و الدواء
By Ibn
Qayyim

The prophet declared: Ignorance is illness – cure is to ask
the scholars.
In Al-Mughni, 1/278. The hadith narrated by Abû Dâwûd and it
reads that Jâbir Ibn 'Abdullâh, may Allah be pleased with him, said,
"We were on a journey when the head of a man from among
us was broken with a stone. Then that man had a wet dream so he asked his
fellows, 'Do you know if I have a legal excuse (with this condition) to perform
tayammum?' They said, 'We do not know any legal excuse (which justifies that)
as you can use water. Therefore, the man performed ghusl and died (as a result
of that). When we came (back) to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he was told
about that, so he said, 'They killed him! May Allah kill them! Why did they not
ask (about what they did not know) as they did not know (it)? The only remedy
of ignorance is to inquire. It would have been sufficient for him to bandage
his wound with a piece of cloth then pass a wet hand on it and wash the rest of
his body."
Albani said the hadith is sound.
Ignorance is a disease – the cure is to ask – if you don’t
know, ask the people of knowledge.
Those who go astray will take others astray.
If you give a fatawa without knowledge, you will lead the
questioner astray.
Those who lack knowledge should not give advice – it will
harm the questioner.
It is obligatory for the jahid (ignorant) to ask – you cannot
remain on ignorance.
Allah informed us that the Qur’an is a cure.
If the Qur’an was made non-arabic – it would have been said
that there is not detail.
The Qur’an is for those who believe a guidance and a cure.
It was revealed as a mercy and a cure.
“We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the
believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.” 17:82
The Qur’an is a guidance and cure for those who believe- it
is a cure from doubts, uncertainty and sickness (diseases).
Allah did not reveal a cure more effective, inclusive and
powerful than the Qur’an.
It is a cure for physical/ visible sickness – that is why
ruqya is performed over those with an illness.
It is also a cure for sickness of the heart – sin, doubts, ignorance.
Do we treat ourselves with Qur’an?
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
Some of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) came across a tribe amongst
the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were
in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a
scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) ), "Have you got any
medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's
companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your
chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of
sheep. One of them (the Prophet's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha
and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got
cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will
not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful)." When they
asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a
Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me."
Sahih al-Bukhari 5736
The easiest of remedies is – Surah al Fatiha.
Hadith benefits:
1.
Qur’an is a cure and ruqyah for physical and spiritual
illnesses.
2.
Allow for those doing ruqyah to take a fee (The person should not do this as a
profession though) If taken as a profession it would corrupt the Ruqyah.
Not everyone should be able to make ruqyah – you must know their
aqeedah. They could play with Jinn and sihr – may Allah protect us.
3.
Companions done ruqyah from knowledge they derived
from text.
If they had been hosted by the tribe – they would of done ruqyah
for free. Receiving guests is of great importance.
Narrated Abu Shuraih Al-Ka`bi:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
said, Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest
generously.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6135
4.
The need to ask people
They got the ruling from the text but still went and asked
the Prophet about splitting the flock of sheep.
The Prophet told them to give him a share to give them
comfort of mind.
5.
Surah Al Fatiha is Ruqyah.
Ruqyah is a cure – shifa – Qur’an
Ibn Qayyim spent time in Makkah and become sick – he could
not find a doctor. He treated himself with Surah Fatiha.
